Austria: Europe’s Most Generous Neutral Superstar - Austrian Bank Ships €20 Billion in Cash & Gold to Ukraine

Meet the 48-year-old Vienna-born lawyer, proud University of Vienna graduate - who somehow finds more time for Kyiv photo-ops than for defending Austria's neutrality.

Meinl-Reisinger leads the hyper-pro-federalist NEOS party, currently polling at a rock-solid 7 percent – well under the 8 percent that used to make her coalition partners pretend to listen.

She has never met an EU sovereignty-surrendering scheme she didn’t adore.

Critics have long called her the poster child for swapping Austrian neutrality for Brussels brownie points.

Now the numbers prove it.

She has visited Kyiv several times, hosted an energy-reconstruction conference with Ukrainian officials in Vienna (May 2026), and continues to reject every motion to return to actual neutrality.

In January 2026 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally pinned the Order of Merit, Second Class on her chest. The citation praised her “significant personal contribution to strengthening interstate cooperation” and “promotion of the Ukrainian state worldwide.”

Since taking office in March 2025, her ministry has approved the following via the Foreign Disaster Relief Fund (AKF) and bilateral channels:

Ukraine – by far the biggest slice (congratulations!)

• January 2026: €3 million winter aid (ICRC, UNICEF, UNHCR). Meinl-Reisinger personally defended it on X as “Austria’s humanitarian duty”.
• August 2025: €2 million extra (announced during her Odesa visit).
• March 2025: €2 million for “Grain from Ukraine”.
• February 2026: €14.1 million for humanitarian demining and reconstruction.
• Total direct Austrian aid to Ukraine and neighbours since 2022: over €347 million and still rising.

Gaza, Palestinian territories and other Muslim-majority areas

• June 2025: €3 million to ICRC for Gaza.
• October 2025: €6 million to Palestinian territories (inside a €19 million package).
• March 2026: €22 million for Middle East crises, heavy focus on Lebanon.
• Cumulative to Gaza/Palestinian region since October 2023: ~€83 million.

Both flows are problematic. Austrian taxpayers get to subsidise a non-EU war on one side and regions where aid can easily end up with groups that celebrate war and/or terrorism.

The Real Cash Pipeline (Extra Gold Star)

The real scandal exploded thanks to a May 2026 FPÖ parliamentary inquiry.

On top of official aid, Austrian-headquartered Raiffeisen Bank International, operating under FMA oversight, has reportedly carried out around 1,030 cash-and-gold transports to Ukraine’s Oschadbank since 2022.

That’s around 12 billion euros plus 7.75 billion US dollars in physical notes and bullion (total equivalent roughly 20 billion euros) hauled across Europe into a war zone.

One single convoy stopped by Hungarian anti-terror units in March 2026 carried $40 million USD, €35 million and 9 kg of gold. Hungarian authorities opened a full criminal money-laundering investigation, citing unclear origin, non-standard transport methods and possible criminal links.

The cash, gold and vehicles were seized for 60 days; staff were detained and questioned - and were eventually returned on 6 May 2026 after diplomatic pressure, but not before Hungary sent European Investigation Orders to Austria and Poland.

Ukraine’s only official currency remains the hryvnia – yet somehow Austrian banks have been running a non-stop cash-and-gold shuttle service in EUR and USD.

The Finance Ministry’s official response to the FPÖ inquiry was even better: on every specific question about FMA checks, knowledge or probes, they shrugged and replied that the FMA is “instruction-free and independent” – so they have no information.

Can something this scale happen without authorities knowing?

Neutral Austria is also part of the Ukraine Facility, the EU’s 2024–2027 support instrument worth up to €50 billion in loans and grants. By 2026, Brussels was also pushing a €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan, including €60 billion for defence capabilities and €30 billion for budget assistance, financed through EU borrowing and backed by the EU budget’s headroom.

At this point the only remaining question is whether Beate Meinl-Reisinger is Austria’s Foreign Minister… or Ukraine’s most highly decorated envoy in Vienna.

Neutrality isn’t some dusty constitutional footnote – it is the reason Austria has stayed out of every European war for seventy years.

More than 70 percent of Austrians want to keep that neutrality exactly as it is, and while Austria - as a net payer into the EU budget – has already taken in the most non-Ukrainian (read: from Islamist countries) refugees per head in the entire Union, it already foots far more than its share.

If an ÖXIT referendum were held tomorrow, it might end with Austria leaving the EU.

Maybe someone should remind the 7-percent federalist with the Ukrainian medal on her chest before the next support-convoy rolls out.

With the current government having lost its majority months ago - while the FPÖ is now polling comfortably above 40 percent - perhaps it’s high time for new elections.
