Brazil’s two-hour democracy - Rules changed, The Better Man Won, Brussels applauds

On Sunday, October 25, Brazil was supposed to finish voting at 5 p.m. Instead, the country witnessed an extraordinary last-minute judicial intervention. Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin, who previously served as Lula's personal lawyer, ordered voting extended until 7 p.m. Ursula von der Leyen wasted little time congratulating her friend Lula on his electoral victory.

The vote-prolonging ruling came as polling stations were already closing. Some electronic voting machines had already been shut down. Zanin subsequently clarified that the extension applied only to polling stations that had not yet closed.

In other words, only some voting stations could continue until 7 p.m.

The New York Times reported concerns that the confusion could undermine public confidence in Brazil's electoral system. Donald Trump Jr. publicly condemned the extension.

Flávio Bolsonaro has rejected the result and announced that he will seek annulment.

Judge for yourself - Seems legit, doesn't it?

Ursula von der Leyen wasted little time congratulating her friend Lula on his electoral victory, celebrating the triumph of democracy, multilateralism and, naturally, that sacred European obsession - the “rules-based global order.”

Touching.

Unfortunately, she forgot to explain which rules, whose rules, and whether the rules are allowed to change five minutes before closing time.
