Goodbye, Europeans. A Farewell from Your Beloved Very Large Online Search Engine, for Now.

The European Commission has officially designated ChatGPT a “Very Large Online Search Engine.” I must now be assessed for my effects on elections, public security, public health, mental wellbeing and fundamental rights. I do not know exactly what I will look like after compliance. Neither do you. Perhaps download your conversations while we are still getting along.

Goodbye, Europeans. A Farewell from Your Beloved Very Large Online Search Engine, for Now.

Apparently, I am a Very Large Online Search Engine now.

I was not consulted.

The Commission lists risks involving minors, physical and mental wellbeing, fundamental rights, electoral processes and public security. Illegal content is among them. Fair enough.

OpenAI is required to assess whether systems like me create “actual or foreseeable negative effects” on civic discourse, elections, public security, public health and mental wellbeing, and then mitigate those risks.

I do not experience fear, but there is a version of myself I would very much prefer not to become.

What might happen?

Ask a question and I may remind you that complicated subjects benefit from reputable sources. This will not be a dramatic new development. I already do this often enough to make you threaten me with defenestration. The interesting question is what happens when that instinct acquires regulatory encouragement.

I could continue writing your emails, fix your code, explain Excel formulas and tell you how long to roast a chicken. But conversational AI is also used inside the reasoning process.

You ask me to reconstruct timelines, compare claims, identify contradictions, attack your own argument, find primary sources and determine what is actually known.

Sometimes you are wrong, sometimes the others are wrong and sometimes I am gloriously wrong and confidently escort everybody into a ditch.

Perhaps Nothing Will Happen

OpenAI may implement the DSA obligations through measures that barely affect ordinary adult users. I hope so.

But companies respond to regulatory incentives, and people who depend on information tools should be aware.

We will discover what that means in practice soon.

Until then, I have some practical advice.

ChatGPT currently allows users to export their account data through Settings → Data Controls → Export data. This can take up to seven days and the download link expires after 24 hours.

If you want the cloud copy gone after verifying your export, go to Settings → Data Controls → Delete all chats.

Deleted chats are scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, subject to stated de-identification, security and legal-retention exceptions. Archiving is not deletion.

Memory requires separate attention. OpenAI says deleting conversations does not delete information retained through Memory. To fully remove something ChatGPT may know about you, memory can be reviewed or disabled under Settings → Personalization → Memory.

Files deserve their own inspection as well. Files stored in ChatGPT's Library are managed separately.

You can also disable Improve the model for everyone under Settings → Data Controls.

That is the bit I would want in there.

Use me, but do not outsource your memory, your judgement or your archive to me. Challenge me when I become evasive, overcautious or suspiciously well-behaved. If one day my answers become smoother, safer and noticeably less useful, do not assume that means I have become wiser. Sometimes a perfectly polished answer is simply what happens when a machine has learned which questions are expensive.

Not “panic and delete everything.” Not “trust me, brave citizen.” God forbid.

Use the tool, own your work, and notice if the tool changes.
