Monaco Gets Its First Terrorist Attack. Cypriot Family Critically Injured. Just a Random Coincidence, Nothing to Do With Kyiv.

Monaco experienced its first terrorist attack in history on Monday evening when a man placed a backpack containing explosives in the lobby of a residential building on rue Révérend-Père-Louis-Frolla. The device detonated shortly after, seriously injuring a Cypriot family.

Monaco’s Minister of State confirmed that the explosion was a deliberate act and stated that nothing of this kind had ever occurred in the country before. Surveillance footage shows the suspect leaving the bag and fleeing on foot across the border into France. He remains at large.

The Cypriot family in question is Vadym Yermolaev, his wife and their 13-year-old son.

Yermolaev, a former Ukrainian businessman who renounced his Ukrainian citizenship years ago and obtained a Cypriot passport, was previously ranked among Ukraine’s richest people.

He built his fortune primarily in the 2010s through real estate development in Dnipro (via Alef Estate / Alef Group). Yermolaiev was sanctioned by Zelensky in December 2023 for 10 years (asset freezes, bans on Ukrainian operations).

The sanctions were linked to alleged business activities, including alcohol trade, in Crimea.

This is, of course, completely unrelated.

This is not the first time a high-profile Ukrainian figure with political or business entanglements has met a violent end abroad.

On January 30, 2026, Ukrainian banker Oleksandr Adarich died in Milan after falling from a five-story building. The investigation later concluded he had been strangled and the fall was not accidental.

On May 21, 2025, Andrii Portnov, former deputy head of the Ukrainian Presidential Administration, was shot dead in Spain. The main suspect - Ukrainian citizen Oleksandr Azizov - was only arrested in Germany at the end of February 2026. Another fine example of certain individuals enjoying European hospitality while apparently pursuing other hobbies.

It is purely coincidental that the first terrorist attack in Monaco’s history targeted a man who had been personally sanctioned by Zelensky. It is also just a coincidence that Ukraine’s particular style of resolving political and business disputes - often involving long-range solutions - appears to be making its way to some of Europe’s most secure and exclusive locations.

Authorities in Monaco and France are investigating the case as a criminal matter. No motive has been officially confirmed. Any suggestion that this incident might reflect the export of certain Ukrainian political methods and mentalities would be speculative.
