Austria’s Cozy New Solution to Freezing Next Winter: Criticize the EU, Sign with Digital ID, Get a Warm Prison Cell – Courtesy of Spionagegesetz 2026

Dear Austrians,

Next winter looking chilly?

Energy bills through the roof thanks to those wonderful EU policies?

Here’s the government’s brilliant fix:

Write a grumpy social media post. Something like “The EU is driving up prices and I’m freezing my arse off.”

First step: sign it properly with your Digital ID – they need to know exactly who dared to complain.

Then? Straight into a nice warm prison cell, courtesy of the new Spionagegesetz 2026.

Six months to five years behind bars is on the table if your post could possibly harm the “reputation, security or important interests” of the EU, the UN, or any international organisation with an office in Vienna.

No actual damage required.

The draft – dated 9 March 2026 and prepared by the SPÖ-led Justice Ministry – is currently being discussed with coalition partners ÖVP and NEOS.

It closes a loophole that made Vienna a spy playground: until now, you could only be prosecuted for spying against Austria itself. Foreign agents happily targeting EU institutions or UN bodies got a free pass.

Now the law expands protection to those international bodies… but with wording so broad that constitutional experts are already shivering themselves.

The best part? This gem is 100% Austrian - not an EU-wide law.
