Climate Change Delivers the Aegean’s First Castrating Fish – Authorities Recommend Steel Trunks for Male Swimmers

Climate change has done it again. This time it has gifted the Mediterranean a new and highly motivated resident: the silver-cheeked pufferfish, Lagocephalus sceleratus, now widely regarded as the Aegean’s first officially recognised castrating fish.

The species, which arrived via the Suez Canal and has been thriving in warming waters, was already known for its powerful beak-like jaws and its ability to destroy fishing nets.

Greek authorities have responded with by launching a bounty of €5.33 per kilogram.

Fishermen who deliver the fish whole for incineration will be paid; the toxic meat cannot be sold or eaten. Cyprus has been running a similar scheme for months and has already removed over 100 tonnes.

While the official warnings focus on tetrodotoxin and the risk of accidental consumption, a growing number of reports from Greek islands suggest the fish has developed more specialised dietary preferences.

Several fishermen, including one from a Cretan port who asked not to be named, claim the pufferfish is no longer content with cans or nets.

“It ignored the can completely,” the fisherman said. “Went straight for the valuables. Never seen anything like it. The fish has clearly done its research.”

Marine biologists have urged the public not to panic, describing the behaviour as “opportunistic feeding in a changing ecosystem.”

Internal documents circulating in Brussels, however, reportedly refer to the targeting of “legacy reproductive tissue” as a possible sign of successful ecological rebalancing.

A Commission spokesperson confirmed that the species is being viewed as “a vibrant addition to Mediterranean biodiversity” .

Among the measures under discussion are mandatory “testicle watch” programmes in high-risk tourist areas and the distribution of reinforced swimwear.

Sceptics point out that confirmed cases of swimmers losing toes or anything else remain rare and that most dramatic videos circulating online appear to be enhanced for engagement.

The primary documented damage continues to affect small-scale fishermen whose livelihoods are being steadily eroded. Whether the pufferfish is also performing a broader service in line with certain EU demographic objectives remains, for the moment, an unofficial theory.
