Helmut Brandstätter – Austria’s Finest Contribution to European Democracy

Stelar Career

Helmut Brandstätter, a figure whose public career has moved with impressive confidence through journalism, politics, moral instruction, online quarrels, and the occasional public relations incident that makes one wonder whether the “delete tweet” button is hidden behind a paywall.

Born on 24 April 1955 in Vienna, Brandstätter studied law at the University of Vienna.

He later completed additional studies at the Johns Hopkins Bologna Center and began working at ORF - the state broadcaster - in 1982. He served as a foreign correspondent in Bonn and played a role in establishing the ORF studio in Brussels in 1986. In 1991 he became head of the politics and current affairs department at ORF headquarters in Vienna.

In 1997 he moved to Germany, where he served as CEO and editor-in-chief of the news channel n-tv in Berlin until 2003.

After returning to Austria, he co-founded and managed Puls TV from 2003 to 2005.

From 2005 to 2010 he ran his own communications agency.

In August 2010, he became editor-in-chief of the Kurier, one of Austria’s most important daily newspapers. In 2013 he was additionally appointed publisher of the paper, a position he held until July 2019.

Politics

In 2019 Brandstätter left journalism and entered active politics. He was elected to the Austrian Nationalrat in October 2019 as a member of NEOS and quickly became the party’s spokesman for foreign policy. In January 2024 he was selected as NEOS’s top candidate for the European Parliament elections and was elected in June 2024.

Since July 2024 he has served as a Member of the European Parliament, sitting with the Renew Europe group. He is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and of the special committee on the European Democracy Shield.

As an MEP, Brandstätter has been a consistent supporter of stronger European instruments to combat disinformation and foreign interference. He has publicly backed the European Democracy Shield and has spoken in favour of a more robust application of the Digital Services Act against platforms that allow what he considers harmful or misleading content.

COVID, mandatory vaccination and views on personal freedom

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Brandstätter was also outspoken. In Nationalrat debates in 2021 he expressed strong support for vaccination.

He repeatedly stressed that Austria would only overcome the pandemic through collective solidarity and that people had a responsibility to get vaccinated. In one session he noted that the majority of his parliamentary group supported the introduction of a vaccine mandate.

Ukraine support

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Brandstätter has been one of the more vocal Austrian voices on the conflict.

In June 2026 he called German politician Max Otte a “stupid liar” for suggesting that the Bucha massacre may have been staged, telling him to go to Bucha and apologise.

On another occasion he accused AfD politicians attending the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum of feeling comfortable “among war criminals and child murderers.”

He is also deeply concerned about building toilets for the Russian people.

Media affinity and free speech

Brandstätter has also demonstrated a willingness to use legal means when he believes his reputation has been attacked.

In 2025, Brandstätter took legal action against the Austrian online outlet exxpress after it labelled him the “laziest Austrian Member of the European Parliament”, citing figures on his participation in recorded plenary votes.

The court ruled in his favour. exxpress was ordered to pay him €3,000 in damages and to publish a correction.

While some observers have noted that Brandstätter’s participation rate in actual plenary votes has been relatively modest compared to several other Austrian MEPs, it is evident that he considers other activities more important.

He maintains a highly active presence on X, where he regularly comments on international politics, blocks accounts he regards as problematic, and corrects what he sees as false or harmful statements.

He regularly explains to people that they are “stupid liars” when they question certain sensitive topics. He also does important work identifying “cowards” and blocking them for the good of democratic discourse. In a time when too many people hide behind anonymity, Brandstätter shows us that real Europeans stand behind their principles - and their block button.

Opinion on Trump

Brandstätter has also been clear in his assessment of foreign leaders.

In June 2026 he publicly stated that the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, is “not fit for president.”

Recent X scandal

Brandstätter has similarly been critical of Elon Musk and the platform X.

Elon Musk announces he is suing the German public broadcaster ZDF over alleged defamation and lies.

Brandstätter immediately jumps in with this comment (written in English for maximum reach):

“How about free speech? I know you don’t like that.”

Two posts later, a troll replies to Brandstätter with crude bait referencing the ZDF case:

“How about spreading some lies and misinformation about you? I heard from ZDF that you like small children. Is that true?”

Brandstätter’s immediate reply was:

“I will sue you. Please provide your address.”

The Austrian outlet exxpress.at quickly published an article pointing out the hypocrisy. Brandstätter then defended himself with this statement:

“The people at exxpress aren’t very bright. These so-called ‘journalists’ still haven’t understood that cowards write under fake names. They will. You should read our European Parliament report on Disinformation and the Democracy Shield - I’ll send it to you.”

Throughout his career, he has shown a consistent preference for institutional solutions, regulatory frameworks, and the active management of public discourse. He now supports stronger European tools such as the Democracy Shield and the Digital Services Act.

The European Democracy Shield is a major EU initiative launched via a Joint Communication on 12 November 2025 by the European Commission and the High Representative: "European Democratic Shield: Empowering Strong and Resilient Democracies".

It frames democracy as under pressure from foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI), disinformation, hybrid threats, and efforts to undermine elections and public trust.

The stated goal is a "whole-of-society" approach to make democracies more resilient while also supporting civil society.

His broader political line is consistent. He is a reliable voice for deeper European integration, strong measures against “disinformation,” and the necessity of shielding democracy from external and internal threats.

He has been particularly vocal in support of Ukraine and in attacking anyone questioning the speed or wisdom of further EU enlargement in that direction.

In Helmut Brandstätter we can observe a politician who has moved from shaping the news to helping shape the rules about what kind of news and opinions should be allowed to circulate freely.

Europe should be grateful for such dedicated servants of our democracy.

Men like Brandstätter remind us that defending European values requires constant vigilance - not only against external enemies, but also against inconvenient questions, critical journalists, and politicians who attend the wrong economic forums.

And if, after all this, you still find yourself disagreeing with him, there is really only one appropriate response left.

Give that man your address.
