According to reports, many of the mines were laid in a disorganized manner and their exact locations were never properly recorded. Some have since drifted. Iranian authorities therefore do not possess a complete map of where the mines currently are.

Tehran has nevertheless rejected offers of international help. The task of locating and removing the mines will be handled domestically.

Iranian state media has frequently showcased footage of inspired young men and women participating in dramatic swimming and diving exercises as part of revolutionary training. These same motivated individuals may now be called upon to conduct a large-scale, methodical underwater search across one of the world’s busiest and most strategically sensitive shipping lanes.

Professional mine clearance usually involves advanced sonar, remotely operated vehicles, specialist vessels, and highly trained divers.

In the meantime, shipping companies, insurers, and everyone with a nervous interest in oil prices will watch closely as Tehran begins the proud national project of finding its own mines before someone else does.

Good luck, lads!
