Viral ‘Syria Wants Them Back’ Narrative Complicated By Syria Clarifying It Mostly Meant Money First

BERLIN - German and Austrian social media users enjoyed a short but beautiful moment of political optimism after viral posts claimed Syria’s new leadership was calling on Syrians in Europe to come home and rebuild the country.

There was only one small issue.

The article being waved around was from December 8, 2024, directly after Assad’s fall.

It referred to Syrian rebels declaring in state television that Damascus had been “liberated” and sending a broad message to displaced Syrians worldwide: “A free Syria awaits you.”

The same BILD article also reported that refugees in Lebanon were already moving toward the Syrian border at Masnaa. In other words, an old post-Assad rebel appeal being warmed up like yesterday’s döner.

Fast Forward to 2026:

Chancellor Friedrich Merz had earlier claimed after talks with Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa that around 80% of the over 900,000 Syrians in Germany would return within three years.

Al-Sharaa, the man who until recently was better known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, former head of HTS, a group with al-Qaeda ties, with a fat U.S. bounty on his head, has since been reintroduced to polite European society, shaking hands with Ursula von der Leyen, Trump and friends.

The former wanted jihadist is now touring diplomatic rooms and discussing Syria’s recovery while the EU pledges €620 million in aid for 2026 and 2027.

Al-Sharaa made it clear - the 80 percent figure was “somewhat exaggerated” and came from Merz, not from him. His position was rather less useful for screenshot politics: returns should be voluntary, safe, dignified, and tied to actual reconstruction.

Syria’s foreign minister Asaad al-Shaibani made the point even less convenient by rejecting forced deportations and describing Syrians abroad as a “strategic resource” rather than a burden. He said Syria wanted donations, infrastructure and a safe environment.

Still, European patriots may want to be careful what they wish for. If all those allegedly indispensable, hard-working Syrian laborers actually left tomorrow, the EU would presumably collapse immediately.
